About the Red Sea
Located below the Suez Canal, the Red Sea stretches along Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and the Gulf of Aqaba. Hurghada, often called the capital of the Red Sea Riviera, serves as the main departure point for northern dive trips, while liveaboards heading to the southern regions typically leave from the Port of Ghalib near Marsa Alam.
The Red Sea covers over 50,000 square miles (130,000 square km), offering year-round diving with crystal-clear waters and striking sky-blue visibility against sandy seabeds. The region features more than 100 dive sites, including reefs, wrecks, and islands.
The area’s currents, flowing out of the Gulf of Aqaba, attract a remarkable variety of marine life from the open ocean, creating rich biodiversity. Divers can encounter vibrant coral gardens, massive schools of tuna, barracuda, jackfish, and even sharks. Its proximity to Europe makes the Red Sea a popular destination for European divers. While coastal dive resorts in Hurghada, Sharm el Sheikh, and Marsa Alam can be crowded and limited to nearby sites, liveaboards allow divers to explore multiple regions in a single trip, such as the popular Brothers, Daedalus, and Elphinstone itinerary.
Getting There
Red Sea liveaboards depart either from Hurghada or Port Ghalib, depending on the chosen itinerary. Hurghada International Airport (HRG) is accessible via direct or connecting flights through Istanbul, Doha, or Dubai. Marsa Alam International Airport (RMF), serving Port Ghalib, typically requires a connection through Cairo (CAI).
